The Spiritual and Emotional Significance of This Supplication
Human existence is intrinsically interwoven with both seen and unseen dimensions. Among the invisible realities acknowledged by Islamic theology is the spiritual reality of the evil eye (al-‘ayn) and envy (al-hasad). The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, affirmed that the evil eye is a genuine phenomenon capable of inflicting profound physical, emotional, and spiritual harm. When an individual looks upon another with a gaze laden with concealed jealousy, covetousness, or unbridled admiration devoid of the remembrance of Allah, a toxic spiritual current can be transmitted. This subtle yet destructive force manifests as sudden illnesses, inexplicable lethargy, behavioral shifts, academic or professional decline, and domestic discord.
Navigating the anxieties associated with envy requires turning to our comprehensive Protection Category Hub for daily spiritual armory. The human heart naturally longs for peace, security, and the preservation of divine blessings (ni’mah). However, the psychological weight of feeling exposed to the envious gaze of others can breed paranoia if not anchored in strict reliance upon Allah (Tawakkul). Rather than falling into a state of constant fear, Islam prescribes specific, authoritative textual remedies. By arming oneself with the final verses of Surah Al-Qalam and authentic Prophetic supplications, the believer transforms vulnerability into an unassailable fortress of divine sanctuary.
It is crucial to recognize that envy originates from a place of spiritual dissatisfaction within the envier, yet its impact strikes the envied. To counteract this, our spiritual tradition teaches us to cultivate inner contentment, practice the habit of invoking blessings (saying Masha’Allah la quwwata illa billah) upon our own blessings and those of others, and maintain regular dhikr. Just as we seek shielding for our immediate domestic spaces—as outlined in the Dua for Protecting Children and Home—we must fortify our personal spiritual aura against the arrows of malice, jealousy, and subtle malice.
Authentic Arabic Supplication with Tashkeel, Transliteration and Word-by-Word Meaning
To effectively repel the malice of envy and the piercing glare of the envious, we look directly to the Noble Quran, specifically the concluding verses of Surah Al-Qalam (Chapter 68, Verses 51-52), alongside authentic daily morning and evening adhkar taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The primary Quranic shield from Surah Al-Qalam:

Transliteration:

Complementary Prophetic Prayer for complete shielding (Ruqyah):
Arabic:
Transliteration:
U’iduka bi-kalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammati, wa min kulli ‘aynin lammah.Meaning:
I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and poisonous reptile, and from every envious evil eye.
Authentic Hadith Citations and Quranic Evidence
The authority of seeking refuge from the evil eye is firmly established in the primary texts of Islamic jurisprudence and Hadith literature. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explicitly warned his community about the devastating potential of envy and the reality of ocular affliction.
In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, numerous traditions emphasize this reality. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“The evil eye is a fact; if anything would precede the decree, it would be the evil eye. When you are asked to take a bath (as a cure) for it, take a bath.” (Sahih Muslim)
Furthermore, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to command me to recite Ruqyah (incantation) against the evil eye.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Regarding Surah Al-Qalam, classical commentators such as Ibn Kathir note in his famous *Tafsir* that Verse 51 points directly to the intensity of the disbelievers’ gaze and animosity toward the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), demonstrating that an envious glance can carry malicious intent capable of causing real harm. Scholars of Ruqyah universally agree that utilizing these specific verses, alongside Surah Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, and the Mu’awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas), forms a comprehensive, sunnah-based shield against all forms of spiritual affliction, envy, and unseen malice.
Practical Recitation Etiquette, Best Times, and Virtues
To maximize the spiritual efficacy of these protective supplications, a believer must observe specific prophetic etiquettes and consistency in practice. Spiritual armor requires daily maintenance, much like physical hygiene.
Step-by-Step Practical Guide for Daily Protection:
- Purification and Focus: Perform Wudu (ablution) and clear your mind of distractions, centering your heart entirely upon the majesty and protective power of Al-Hafiz (The Preserver).
- Timing: Recite the designated verses and prayers during the prescribed windows of morning (after Fajr prayer until sunrise) and evening (after Asr prayer until sunset).
- The Method of Blowing (Nafth): Recite Surah Al-Qalam (Verses 51-52), Ayatul Kursi, and the Three Quls into the palms of your hands, gently blow into them with a light mist of saliva, and wipe your hands over your entire body—from your head down to your feet—as far as your hands can reach.
- Protecting Dependents: Perform the same gentle blowing method over your children, spouse, and home while reciting these protective chapters with absolute faith.
- Mindful Expression of Blessings: Cultivate the habit of saying “Masha’Allah la quwwata illa billah” (What Allah willed has occurred; there is no power except with Allah) whenever you witness something impressive in your wealth, children, or personal achievements, as taught by the Prophet (PBUH) to prevent self-inflicted envy (al-‘inab).
Maintaining these daily habits creates an impenetrable spiritual barrier, ensuring that the heart remains tranquil, resilient, and completely shielded from the whispers of jealousy and the piercing arrows of the evil eye.
